Israel plans barrier along border with Egypt. January 11, 2010

Israel police estimate that 100 to 200 people infiltrate Israeli’s 210-kilometer (130-mile) southern border weekly. Israel’s Hotline for Migrant Workers, a group that promotes the rights of undocumented workers, puts the number at “a few thousand” a year.Ninety percent of those crossing the border illegally are refugees from northern Africa, the group said. The rest are thought to be migrant workers or traffickers of drugs and women.

Construction of the barrier with Egypt is expected to take several years, according to the prime minister’s office. No start date has been announced. The estimated cost of the project is 1 billion shekels (about $269 million). The fence will be built in two sections. One will begin near Rafah and run south, while the other will start near the resort town of Eilat and go north. The barrier will not cover difficult terrain in the middle that already discourages border crossings.

Israel has already built a controversial barrier separating the West Bank from the Jewish state. Construction was begun by Israel in 2002 in the stated attempt to stem the tide of Palestinian suicide bombing attacks that became a frequent and deadly occurrence in Israel during the course of the second intifada which began in September 2000.

The barrier is currently over 400 km (248.5 miles) in length and is comprised of 20-foot sections of concrete wall in more densely populated areas and large barbed wire fencing in rural sections. Construction of the full 700-plus kilometers (435-plus miles) of the barrier has stalled considerably in the last two years as a result of court challenges and budgetary issues. Last July the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillar urged Israel to “dismantle” the barrier and “make reparation for all damage suffered by all persons affected by the wall’s construction” on Palestinian land.

I was doing my homework at the dining-room table. My older sister Agnes was asleep upstairs. Us mother was out, but she was expected back any minute. When the front door opened and shut,I called,”Hello,Mama!” But my mom didn’t answer. And the footsteps I heard were heavier, like a man’s. “Who’s there?” I called. No one replied. I heard whoever it was walk through the living room, then up the stairs to the second floor. The footsteps moved from one bedroom to another. Again I called,” Who’s there?” The footsteps stopped. Then I thought, “Oh, my God! Agnes is in her bedroom.” I ran upstairs to Agnes’s room. Only Agnes was there, and she was asleep. I went back down to the dining room, scared out of her wits. Soon I heard footsteps again. They were coming down the stairs, into the living room. Now they went into the kitchen. Then the door between the kitchen and the dining room slowly began to open… “Get out!” I screamed. The door slowly closed. The footsteps moved out of the kitchen, through the living room, toward the front door. The door opened and shut. I ran to the window to see who it was. No one was in sight. Nor were there any footprints in the fresh snow that had been falling.

This quote is important always to remember. Example dump  your older friends  for the popular crowd. You can spend more time with your new popular friends, but try to make time for old friends too because they really are your true friends who like you for who you are. If your old friends start becoming mean then you, ask why. Maybe their feelings are hurt. But stop hanging around anyone who puts you down all the time.

This article is about how  Rick Perry has shaken up a state commission that is probing whether a man executed in 2004 belonged on death row. Perry’s move forces the commission to delay a scheduled hearing on the case. The governor acted two days before the commission was to hear from an expert who has cast doubt about the quality of the arson investigation that helped convict Cameron Todd Willingham of murder in the deaths of his three daughters in a fire at their home.Death-penalty opponents say a thorough review of the Willingham case may force Texas to admit that it executed an innocent man. The Texas governor and others, however, say they remain convinced of Willingham’s guilt.Perry replaced the chairman of the Texas Forensic Science Commission and declined to reappoint two commission members. The commission was to hear testimony Friday from Craig Beyler, an arson investigation expert. He wrote the latest of three reports critical of the testimony that helped prosecutors convict Willingham of murder in 1992.
